HEAT Update

2009 proved to be HEAT's biggest year yet! Highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard visiting HEAT to announce that HEAT was successful in receiving funding to build a training kitchen at our Pickles St site in the SKYS Learning Centre. We hope to be cooking in the kitchen by May 2010. Ms Gillard visited HEAT a second time to officially launch our first ever cookbook "HEAT- the way forward is good food". The book includes recipes from top chefs Guy Grossi, Luke Mangan, Ian Curley and Andrew McConnell along with inspirational stories from HEAT students and mouth watering recipes that are easy to prepare at home. Don't miss out! Buy a copy NOW!

We kicked off 2010 with an invitation to a prestigious event for HEAT graduates, HEAT patron Guy Grossi and staff, from the Governor of Victoria and His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales to be guests for a reception at Government House.

HEAT 16 students are now well settled into the current course, and are busy in the William Angliss kitchens, learning the art of coffee making and visiting some of Melbourne best foodie spots including the Queen Victoria Market. Our first major event for the year is the annual Homeless World's Longest Lunch held as part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival.

Welcome also to our new Where Are They Now column where we catch up with past HEAT students and their achievements.

I hope you enjoy the read.

Cheers,
Vanessa

Government House Reception attended by HRH Prince William

HEAT patron Guy Grossi, HEAT graduates and staff were invited to attend a reception to celebrate Australia day in the Presence of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales KG. The invitation came from the Governor and Mrs Jan de Kretser, and was held at Government House Melbourne on Thursday 21st Jan 2010.

It was a unique experience; all who attended felt very honoured and  excited when Prince William took time to chat with HEAT graduate Ben Wojcik and SKYS CEO Emma Crichton. The Prince congratulated Ben on his achievements and wished him well for his career in hospitality.

Homeless World's Longest Lunch
Following a sell-out event in 2009, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival has reunited with HEAT to bring back the Homeless World's Longest Lunch on Friday 12 March.

To be held on the lawns of the majestic St Kilda Town Hall, the event will occur simultaneously with 20 other World's Longest Lunches held throughout Victoria and will enable less fortunate members of the community to enjoy and share in this iconic event.

HEAT students will  serve a three course lunch to over 150 guests who will experience a taste of being a part of a exciting hospitality event.

HEAT Patron Guy Grossi will help create a delicious three-course lunch - including his very own Penne con Pomodoro Passata as well as recipes from the HEAT Cookbook. Your $50 donation will enable a homeless member of the community to be a guest at the Homeless World's Longest Lunch. All proceeds will go directly to HEAT. Donations are tax deductible.

HEAT Garden

HEAT Garden
HEAT, the Rotary Club of Albert Park and the Port Phillip Eco Centre have been working together to build and maintain the HEAT Edible Garden. HEAT received a $3,500 donation from the Rotary Club of Albert Park, which funded the establishment of two garden beds and a herb garden. The garden uses a 'wicker system' which is a new method of water saving.

HEAT 15 played a leading role in the establishment of the garden along with Wendy Van Dort from the Eco Centre. The garden set up will incorporate the use of the garden in an assessment tool coordinated with HEAT Chef/Trainer Arnold from William Angliss.  Each HEAT group will use the garden to grow seasonal vegetables and herbs, which can be used at our HEAT community lunches.

Where are they now?

Recently I caught up with a past HEAT student to find out what she remembered about HEAT and where she is now.

After a couple of failed attempts at year 11 and as a victim of homelessness, Michelle (not her real name) heard about HEAT from a housing worker. Michelle had no idea of what she wanted to do, but had a keen interest in becoming a bartender and wanted to  learn more about the hospitality industry.

When I asked Michelle what was the best thing she got out of HEAT her response was:

"HEAT gave me confidence, I met lots of new people. Graduating from HEAT was the first real achievement I had ever had in my life. Getting my Certificate in Hospitality made me realise I was capable of completing something. It gave me the courage and drive to enrol in a Diploma of Youth Work and a Certificate IV in Alcohol and other Drugs".

Michelle is now in her second and final year of the certificate IV course, and on completion she is considering starting her career by working with young people who are experiencing homelessness.
